I’ve greatly enjoyed volunteering with Read Aloud Delaware. I’ve had the privilege to work with great young people. This program is widely recognized as one of the most important literacy organizations in the state. Even Governor Carney recognizes it’s contribution.
Who We Are
A nonprofit corporation dedicated to the promotion of reading in Delaware. We are the only statewide organization focusing attention on the critical early years of child development.
What We Do
We promote reading aloud to children in order to encourage a love of books and a desire to become a reader. We also help parents prepare their children to learn once they enter school.
Why We Do It
There is a strong relationship between basic skill levels, teen parenthood and poverty. Weak basic skills increase the likelihood of youth pregnancy, dropping out of school, unemployment, and dependency on public assistance.
How We Do It
Volunteers of all ages read one on one to children in child care centers, clinics and shelters serving low income families. In the past year, 700 volunteers read almost 60,000 times to nearly 6,000 individual children.
